Property owners in the city of Hartwell will see a slight decrease to their property taxes after the city council rolled back the millage rate  from 10.7 mils to 10.3 mils on Friday.

The 2020 budget was approved on Friday after a second reading with a rollback in the millage rate that will mean a drop in what property owners pay per $1,000 of assessed valuation to $10.30.

“That’s at least the first time in eight years that we have been able to roll the millage back and I know since I’ve been here, we’ve have to raise utility rates every year on water, sewer and gas to help compensate. This is the first year nothing is being touched,” Mayor Brandon Johnson said.
