Alice Holmes Barksdale, 90, of Hugh Dorsey Road, Hartwell, passed away Wednesday, May 12, 2021 at Rainey Hospice House, Anderson, S.C. 
Born on October 18, 1930, in LaGrange Ga., she was the daughter of the late Alexander Franklin "Frank" Holmes and Florence Grace Moncrief Holmes. Mrs. Barksdale was a retired Clerk to the Commission for the Fulton County Board of Commissioners and a member of the Sharon Presbyterian Church. 
Survivors include her two sons: Mark Smith (Kim) of Newnan and David F. Smith of Spring Park, MN; one daughter, Diane Smith of Newnan; two step-daughters: Georgia Dodge (Julian) of Ft. Mitchell, KY and Allison Humphrey (Curtis) of Milton, IA; one sister, Lena Baker of Plano, TX; seven grandchildren: Harper Smith, Sebastian Smith, Eda Clare Smith, Lauren Smith, David A. Smith, Ian Smith (Betsy), Emily Munoz (Eddie); three step-grandchildren: Seth Mitchell, David Dodge, Amanda Dodge; and two great-grandchildren: Dominic Munoz and Madelyn Smith. Mrs. Barksdale was preceded in death by her first husband, Dr. David Oliver Smith, and her second husband, Dr. Malcolm Thomas Barksdale.  
Mrs. Barksdale was a strong woman of character and drive. Having left Maryville College for marriage in 1950, she resumed her studies in 1970 and graduated with honors from Georgia State University, all while working full time and raising her three children. She was also admired for her positive attitude, her practical approach to life, and her sense of humor.
A graveside memorial service for Mrs. Barksdale will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, May 21, at the Nancy Hart Memorial Park with the Rev. Jim Lugo officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Sharon Presbyterian Church, P.O. Box 1051, Hartwell, GA 30643 or Hospice of the Upstate, Inc., 1835 Rogers Road, Anderson, SC 29621. 
The Strickland Funeral Home and Cremation Services of Hartwell is in charge of all arrangements.
