A Hart County Road Department official was arrested on felony drug and theft charges last week while he was at work, authorities say.
Roads superintendent Jeffrey Dean Smart, 36, of Hartwell, was arrested on Dec. 31 while he was at work and charged with possession of a controlled substance (morphine sulfate), possession of a schedule II controlled substance (Oxycodone) and theft by receiving stolen property.
He has since been released on $27,500 bond.
Hart County Sheriff Mike Cleveland said investigators located Oxycodone pills inside of Smart’s truck while he was at work on Dec. 31.
