Duke Swafford had an important decision to make with the eyes of a packed gymnasium at Hartwell Elementary on him, adding to the pressure.

The moment on Oct. 24 at the ribbon cutting for the new machine was a lot for a kindergartener. Duke was up to the challenge.

He reached the golden token in his hand high above his head, inserted it into Inchy’s Bookworm Vending Machine and chose the first book ever dispensed by the brand new device to great applause.

Duke chose a “Pete the Cat” book.

“It’s fun because I get to read more books,” he said.
