News Senatorial candidates face off By Megan E. DavisStaff writer Accusations of a false endorsement from Georgia Gov. Sonny Perdue surround Georgia Sen. Nancy Schaefer's campaign as she heads into an Aug. 5 primary run-off against Jim Butterworth. Butterworth cried foul after Schaefer's campaign mailed a flyer to constituents just before the July 15 primary, reminding them to vote. Butterworth took particular issue with the inclusion of the following quote attributed to Perdue: "Nancy Schaefer is a strong voice in the Senate for Northeast Georgia and I can count on her integrity and commitment in the State Senate." "Unfortunately, all we have received from Schaefer is a long line of disappointing political stunts designed to distract us from her failures," Butterworth Campaign Manager Dan Gasaway said in a press release. "This last minute mailer full of supposed endorsements is yet another example of why it's time for a change." Schaefer said the flyer's wording was misconstrued. "The piece that went out gave his statement, but never said anything about an endorsement," she said. Schaefer said the governor made the statement two years ago and she has used it in previous mailers. Bert Brantley, Perdue's press secretary, said the governor said he had not endorsed anyone in the race. "He said voters should make their own decisions based on whatever they're looking for in a senator," Brantley said. Brantley said he was not sure if or when Perdue made the statement. megandavis@hartcom.net
