Georgia DOT starts work on I-85 cable barriers

Breaking News

Georgia DOT announce Thursday, Jan. 11, work to install a cable barrier system in the median of Interstate 85 in Franklin and Hart Counties will begin Monday, Jan. 15, if weather permits.

"Nationwide Fence and Supply Company will begin work Monday to install a cable barrier and guardrail in the median of Interstate 85 in Franklin and Hart counties," said DOT Communications Officer Teri Pope. "Lane closures will occur on I-85 daylight to dark Mondays through Thursday and daylight till noon on Fridays. The inside or left lane will be closed for about two miles as crews work in the median. Weekdays work will occur both northbound and southbound; closing the inside lane in each direction of I-85. Overnight work could occur if needed but only Mondays through Thursdays. No lane closures are allowed after noon on Fridays through the weekend. Work not requiring lane closures can occur at any time."

Crews will begin work at the South Carolina State Line and work south to the Franklin - Jackson County Line.

The 23.65 mile long project has a completion date of Dec. 31 and a cost of $5,378,898.50. The woven cable system utilized four horizontal tensioned cables supported with vertical steel posts with concrete foundations.

Georgia DOT has installed 70 miles of cable barrier to date. The locations include 1-20 in Warren, McDuffie and Columbia Counties, 29 miles; I-75 in Bartow County, 15 miles; I-575 in Cherokee County, 22 miles; SR 400 in Fulton County, 2 miles; and US 78 in DeKalb County, 3 miles.

"We are looking at installations of this system at five additional locations including I-85 in Jackson County," Pope said. "Please check www.georgianavigator.com <http://www.georgianavigator.com> for the latest traffic information."
